Diagnosis: In Fifty Words
36April 8, 2014 by Melanie L.
“Ali’s sick? Did you hear?”
“It’s just a rumor. She’d have called if it were true.”
“Well, I’m calling her to find out, just to be clear!”
“Ok. Call me back when you’re through.”
Tick, tock. Phone rings.
“Are you sitting down?”
Clock stops. Tears spring.
“Stage 4.” Hospice bound.
This post is inspired by the weekly challenge: a story in 50 words.

I should say that I like the direct, matter-of-factness of the story, not the reality of cancer or hospice care.

Ugh – this one reads too much like nonfiction! Well done.

Thank you! But, that’s because it is nonficiton, though I did take some liberties with the dialogue. 😦 I lost my best friend to cancer 2 1/2 years ago. And it’s true she didn’t tell us (myself and another best friend) right away because, get this, we were pregnant and she didn’t want to upset us too much. She was such a caring soul. My very first blog post, Open Love Letter to My Forever Friend, is all about her.

Oh wow. That’s so sad.
I think that grief is a great motivator to get us writing – probably the fodder for many “first blogs.” I’m sorry for your loss.

Sad, chilling, effective. Great piece of work.
