Summer beckoned.
Outside we bounded.
“Avoid the cornfield!” Mom hounded.
Heather we joined.
Others we summoned, including the boys.
Kickball ensued
Until “I’m re-seeding the lawn!” someone’s dad rued.
Away we sulked.
Ennui loomed.
But, Joey brightened.
“To the cul-de-sac!” he boomed.

This really brought me back to my own childhood summers when I would roam around with kids from the neighborhood, sometimes swimming, sometimes hanging out, sometimes joining a giant pickup kickball game. It’s so different now, of course, with organized sports or non-stop video games.

So true. My urban kids are at a bigger disadvantage. Our “yard” is all concrete. At least we have one, I guess.

Ah man, this was my life a couple years back, filled with bicycles, dirty shorts and sweaty, grinning faces. As a “mature” teenager, the bike is still there, but cleaner, and hanging out no longer happens at a playground, which I miss. We have to be responsible now… T_T
Great, evocative post. Congrats!

Bouncy?! I like that! Just like the red rubber kickball we used! I miss those days. I’m glad you enjoyed the read!

I was going to say bouncy too. I pictured all the kids skipping from game venue to venue! Good work, Mel!

A cul-de-sac sounds like a great venue for kickball.

It really was (except when someone tried to slide home).

It’s all fun and games until someone decides to use the VW as a water slide. This was quite a trip down memory lane–thank you!

Thanks! It’s hard to crunch things down to 42 words. I had really wanted to add a bit about a two-fingered whistle call to dinner. If I could have put that in, then THAT would have been talent.

Nice job Mel. Cul de Sacs make good playgrounds due to the lack of traffic. I always hated having to stop the game for cars to go by.
